GCSE students celebrate results at TVU Reading
Thursday 27 August 2009
GCSE students at TVU's Sixth Form Academy in Reading were celebrating after receiving their results today.
Students had a nervous wait before they were able to pick up results just after midday.
Nick Wood, 18, achieved an English GCSE at grade C. He has previously done a National Diploma but had to gain his GCSE to get into his university of choice. He said:
'I absolutely can't believe it! Everything I came to TVU for, I have got. Now I can go to University of Bournemouth to do my Music Performance Foundation Degree.'
Hannah Daniell, 19, who received her A Levels last week, gained better grades than she needed to get into her first choice university. However, in order to take up the place, she needed to gain her Maths GCSE. She said:
'I feel so good and very relieved as I got a C grade which means I can now take my place at university to study teaching.'
Mature student Nicola Bradbury, 40, was overwhelmed to receive an A grade English GCSE. She said:
'Next year I'm planning to go on to do another GCSE as I want to get the qualifications that will help me to get a better job.'
This year, the results show an overall pass rate (A* to G grades) of 99 per cent for the Academy, an increase of four per cent on 2008 figures. Students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in 15 subjects, including English where the number of students receiving A* to C grades was up by 13 per cent to 51 per cent. The Maths pass rate has also increased with 47 per cent of students receiving an A* to C grade (up eight per cent on last year) and 99 per cent of students achieving an A* to G grade (up 10 per cent). Overall, the A* to C pass rate for GCSEs this year is 46 per cent – six per cent higher than last year.
Cheryl Pennington, Director of Studies for the Sixth Form Academy at TVU, said:
'I am very pleased with the improvement in A* to C grades and the overall increase in the pass rate on the one year GCSE re-sit course. Most of the students receiving results today will progress onto Level 3 courses at TVU, for example A Levels, National Diplomas or the new Diploma qualification. The Sixth Form team would like to take this opportunity of congratulating all of the students on their success today and wish them well in their future studies.'
